Fishers eyes 2nd resolution backing Sallie Mae office
Fishers and Muncie, home to the state’s two Sallie Mae offices, plan to pass resolutions tonight to support the company, which is in danger of losing much of its business to student loan reform.
Fishers’ resolution will be its second this year in support of Sallie Mae. The new resolution encourages the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to pass an alternate plan for student loan reform that Sallie Mae and other lenders proposed.
The U.S. House already passed a version that would give the government control over issuing student loans, which would take away a huge chunk of Sallie Mae’s business. In that plan, Sallie Mae still could service student loans, but the company likely would have to cut its staff by about one-third and close some branches, Sallie Mae spokeswoman Martha Holler said this summer.
Sallie Mae’s two Indiana branches employ 2,300, which is more than one-fourth of the company’s workforce nationwide. Fishers employees are working with Sallie Mae and lawmakers to try to help save the company, Town Council President Scott Faultless said in September.
“Keeping Sallie Mae is their No. 1 priority … and will be until the matter is decided in congress,” Faultless said. “We’re doing everything we can to keep Sallie Mae here and prosperous.”
The Fishers Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. today at Fishers Town Hall, 1 Municipal Drive.
