Fire damages Woodruff Place home
A house fire Wednesday on the city’s Near Eastside left one person with minor injuries and caused about $25,000 in damage.Indianapolis firefighters were called about 9 a.m. to the Woodruff Place home in the 700 block of Middle Drive, said Capt. Rita Reith, a spokeswoman for the Indianapolis Fire Department.Four residents were in the two-story home when the fire broke out. Three escaped on their own, but the fourth was trapped on the second floor because she was afraid to navigate through the thick, black smoke, Reith said. The woman broke a window with her hand to alert firefighters that she was in the house, and they escorted her down the stairs.Suffering minor cuts to her hand, she was checked at the scene but not hospitalized. The cause of the fire is under investigation by IFD and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.Charles Neill, a retired Indianapolis firefighter who owns the home, said he thought the fire started in an upper rear bedroom and may have been electrical.
