Fever take on Chicago in critical road game
That the Indiana Fever are having a landmark season has been underscored repeatedly — in the standings and the record books.
But even though the WNBA playoffs start in a week, the Fever have work to do in the regular season. They could overtake the Phoenix Mercury for overall No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
The Fever (22-10) play on the road tonight against the Chicago Sky (15-17) in the next-to-last game of the regular season.
Depending on outcomes elsewhere, the game could be a preview of a first-round playoff pairing. Chicago, Washington and Connecticut are tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference. Top-seeded Indiana plays the No. 4 seed in the first round.
Phoenix (22-10) is at Seattle tonight. Any combination of Fever losses and Mercury victories totaling two gives the No. 1 seed to Phoenix.
The Fever would have to finish with a better record to be No. 1. A tie-breaker goes to the Mercury because their record against the East (10-4) is better than Indiana’s against the West (5-7).
Fever milestones:
Their 22 wins surpass the franchise record set in consecutive 21-13 seasons from 2005-07.
The Fever’s 17-3 record against the East is the third-best conference record ever, and best since 2001. Houston was 15-1 vs. the East in 1998 and Los Angeles 19-2 vs. the West in 2001.
Tamika Catchings has 97 steals. She needs four to break the WNBA record of 100 set by New York’s Teresa Weatherspoon in 1998. A 101st steal also would increase Catchings’ career total to 629, making her No. 2 in league history.
Catchings, Tully Bevilaqua (60), Ebony Hoffman (54) and Katie Douglas (52) each has more than 50 steals, making the Fever the first team to have as many as four players exceeding 50. The Fever need three steals to break their own WNBA record of 354 in a season, set in 2006.
