Like many other Hoosier children, our 9-year-old son lives and breathes basketball, but in particular the Indiana Fever.

To the team, I say you have given him a truly professional group of athletes and role models to follow and admire and connect with. He talks about each of you and references you by your first names as if you are sitting at our dinner table. He takes turns pretending to be each of you as he practices jump shots, layups or free throws in the driveway.

You have shown him the importance of teamwork through your example. Your strong work ethic on the court encourages him to work harder as he practices. From your example, he knows to never give up — in school or on the court.

You have demonstrated that you value your fans and the community in which you reside, leading him to volunteer with younger children at his school. Over the course of your record-setting season, you have continued to welcome opportunities to give a child a high-five or sign an autograph.

Although the bottom line is important to those who run the business side of your franchise, do not let your team’s success be measured solely by statistics and balance sheets. Please know that you have had a positive impact on our son, and our community, in ways that are immeasurable. We will be there to cheer you on in 2010.
