Family of woman hit by cop car files suit
A wrongful-death lawsuit has been filed against the city of Indianapolis by the family of a woman struck by a police cruiser while she crossed a street on New Year’s Eve.
The suit, filed Monday in Marion Superior Court, says the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department cruiser was speeding at the time of the fatal pedestrian accident. The family of Amber Raines, 20, had questioned the officer’s speed soon after the crash, but IMPD brass defended Officer Erin Ringham’s conduct while an internal probe was still under way.

The results of that internal investigation were not immediately available this morning. The night of the crash, Raines was walking with friends to a New Year’s Eve party about 9 p.m. Ringham, an officer for about 14 months, was responding to call nearby but didn’t have her car’s lights or siren activated. The cruiser struck Raines in the 2200 block of South Keystone Avenue, and she died later at a hospital. Raines was the mother of an infant and a toddler.IMPD officials called the incident “a terrible tragedy” at the time. The suit, filed by Raines’ mother, Gladys Mullarkey, says Ringham should have activated her emergency equipment to alert pedestrians. The lawsuit seeks damages for medical, burial and estate expenses as well as compensation for Raines’ children for the loss of her love, affection and future financial support.
