“Spatially Severed” — the current album by Indianapolis band Everything, Now! — is a pop recording in the tradition of “Nuggets,” the celebrated compilation of garage and psychedelic tunes of the 1960s.

The music is melodic, fun and made for sing-alongs.

The lyrics, however, come from a less-accessible place.

“‘Spatially Severed’ is an outer space opera about beings that create each other and also cease to exist when they stop believing in one another,” vocalist-guitarist Jon Rogers says. “It’s also about rock ‘n’ roll transmissions that have been sent into outer space, reflecting off of human brains and coming back in a new form.”

One song, “Savior of Sector Ten,” maps out an exodus to a homemade planet. “Alice of Dixie Cup” relates the over-the-top tale of a girl who melts after experimenting with drugs in a far-off galaxy.

Religion often makes the trip, as heard within the lyrics of “Brother of the Prodigal Son” and “Hello, God,” which isn’t surprising for a band that issued an album titled “Bible Universe” in 2007.

Rogers says the inclusion of spirituality is a byproduct of artistic growth. When Everything, Now! released debut album “Sunshine of Doom” in 2003, Rogers had no use for the topic.

“I started to understand that while I’m not a Christian person or a religious person in any way, (religion) shapes people’s understandings in such a vital way that I couldn’t ignore that or leave it out of my music,” he says.

If the space-meets-spirituality theme of “Spatially Severed” reminds listeners of Scientology, Rogers says he did look into the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard before writing 30 songs more than a year ago.

Some of those songs are found on “Spatially Severed,” and others are planned for the final two entries in a trilogy of albums.

Everything, Now! will perform March 27 at Locals Only, and a West Coast tour is scheduled for May with Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s.

Similar to major-label Margot, Everything, Now! is a band with Muncie roots that found a home in Indianapolis.

Rogers says it’s more of a challenge for a band to get noticed in Indianapolis, but he’s happy to be here.

“I like being a little bit separated from any sort of college scene, or being approached to play by the same two or three bars every month,” he says.
