Indianapolis marked Earth Day on Wednesday by demonstrating ways to live greener lives.

A midday event at Downtown’s City Market connected organizations, vendors and city departments with people looking for earth-friendly products and conservation information.

“We try to pay attention to the good things that are going on,” said John Gibson, executive director of Earth Charter Indiana, an organization that encourages people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. “We discover people who are into sustainability. Some of these people feel isolated, and we try to connect with them.”

The low-key event came on the 39th anniversary of the first Earth Day observance and included organizations such as the Hoosier Environmental Council, which is spending this week lobbying the legislature for environmental initiatives.

The city’s Earth Day message extended to a project a few blocks north of the plaza: the recently painted bicycle lanes on Michigan and New York streets.

“Indianapolis is fairly bicycle-friendly,” said Nancy Tibbett of the Indiana Bicycle Coalition, who has been working to get motorists and bicyclists to share the roads. “There’s an occasional incident, but for the most part it’s pretty encouraging.”

Mayor Greg Ballard will join cyclists for an inaugural ride on the lanes May 16, one day after Indianapolis Bike-to-Work Day.

Earth Day activities continue Saturday with the Earth Day Indiana Festival on the American Legion Mall.
