Emmis Communications is pulling the plug on a popular Labor Day weekend fireworks show due to the recession.

Officials of the Indianapolis-based media company said they will have to cancel the Sky Concert because of a lack of funding. Labor Day this year is Sept. 7.“Due to the state of the economy, we have been unable to garner the financial partners necessary to support the event, and we are unable to take on the full cost ourselves,” Emmis said in a news release, issued late Friday.

The company called it “our gift to our hometown.”“In better times, Emmis was able to view this event as a demonstration of the gratitude we felt for our audiences,” the company said.Emmis plans to resume Sky Concert as the economic climate improves.
