Emmis cutting 35 radio jobs, cutting some salaries by 3%
For the second time this year, Emmis Communications Corp. is laying off employees in an attempt to weather rough times in the radio industry.
The Indianapolis-based broadcaster cut 29 full-time and six part-time positions last week, spokeswoman Kate Snedeker confirmed via e-mail Monday. She wouldn't say whether any of the employees were from Indianapolis, but the total is about 4 percent of Emmis' radio division.
Snedeker also said the company ordered a 3 percent pay cut for corporate and radio-division employees who earn more than $50,000 a year.
These are desperate cost- cutting measures in desperate times.
Advertising revenue, on which radio broadcasters rely, is shrinking with the economy.
Last week, Moody's Investors Service downgraded $744 million of the company's debt because of revenue challenges at stations in its largest markets.
Shares of Emmis, down more than 80 percent this year, were off 3 cents, or 4.6 percent, Monday at 68 cents.
"Like most of our peers, Emmis is facing the challenges of a struggling media sector and a turbulent economy," Snedeker said. "Last week, Emmis Radio instituted a series of steps to better position it for success."
Other radio broadcasters have resorted to cutting jobs, too.
CBS Radio has said it will cut about 5 percent of its work force, and Clear Channel started laying off employees last year.
In February, Emmis laid off 46 employees, or about 5 percent of its radio division. Most were part-time employees, and a few were on-air personalities. Emmis also shifted about a dozen other employees to new jobs or cut their work hours.
