Eagles had opportunities to rally against Fort Wayne Snider

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — When Guerin Catholic fell behind 11th-ranked Fort Wayne Snider by two goals early in Tuesday’s Snider Semistate final, the Golden Eagles were in a familiar position.

Late in the regular season, on the same field, Guerin overcome a two-goal deficit to tie. This time, there would be no comeback.

With the Eagles pushed forward looking to score, the Panthers added a third goal on the way to a 3-0 victory to advance to Saturday’s girls soccer state finals at Kuntz Stadium.

“I think we can come back against anybody,” Guerin coach Jonathan McClure said. “I think we just had to get our poise and set the tempo and get the opportunities and take advantage of the opportunities we had. We got all the opportunities we could handle and just weren’t able to tuck it away.”

The Eagles (16-5-1) outshot the Panthers (16-3-3) 11-10. Snider put six shots on goal to Guerin’s four.

“We can play with Snider. We can play with anybody,” McClure said. “We have to make the most of our opportunities.”

The Panthers got on the board in the fifth minute on a goal by Courtney Davies, then added another in the 16th minute from Taylor Stevens.

“The early mistakes hurt, but it wasn’t anything we needed to panic about because I don’t care who we play, with the heart on this team and the talent on this team, we can come back from deficits like that. Just not tonight.”

The Eagles’ best opportunity came in the 52nd minute, when Kristen Broadbent got loose on a breakaway, but Snider goalkeeper Krysta Hedrick tipped her shot over the crossbar. The Panthers’ last goal came on a breakaway by Elizabeth Carr.
