His 4 3-pointers bring Purdue from behind against Ohio State

Chris Kramer saw a certain look in the eyes of E’Twaun Moore in the second half Sunday afternoon and he knew exactly what he had to do.

Get Moore the ball.

With ball in hand, Moore did the rest. He scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, including four of his five 3-pointers, to lift Purdue to its first Big Ten Tournament title with a 65-61 victory over Ohio State before 12,526 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

“E’Twaun is one of those guys who you just keep giving him the ball because he’s such a playmaker and a scorer,‘’ Kramer said. "When he got hot, there was no doubt that’s what we were going to do. The great thing about this team, though, is that we have so many options. Once one guy slows down, someone else is ready to step up.’’

Purdue’s reward for a tournament title was a No. 5 seed in the West Region, where it will meet 12th-seeded Northern Iowa on Thursday in Portland, Ore. By losing, Ohio State settled for a No. 8 seed and will play Siena in the Midwest Region in Dayton, Ohio. If the Buckeyes win that one, however, they will likely meet top-seeded Louisville.

Purdue (25-9) won Sunday’s title despite hitting just 34.4 percent from the field, its worst shooting effort in a victory this season. Last Sunday, the Boilers shot 28.3 percent in a regular season-ending loss at Michigan State.

“We just couldn’t get our shots to go down but we felt like we were getting really good looks and we knew that if we stayed with it, good things would happen,‘’ Moore said. "I give my teammates all the credit. They just kept getting me the ball in good situations, and I got hot at the right time.’’

Purdue committed just seven turnovers, including just two in the final 20 minutes. The Boilermakers held a significant edge in rebounding at 44-33. On offensive rebounds, Purdue led 18-5.

“I don’t think we played with enough intensity on defense,‘’ said Ohio State guard Jon Diebler. "They made some big shots in the corner, especially E’Twaun Moore. But we just didn’t come out with the intensity that we needed to and they took advantage of that.’’

Moore hit a 3-pointer from the right wing early in the second half to make it 33-30. He tied the score with a 3 out of the left corner at the 13:06 mark to make it 40-all, and then put the Boilers on top 43-41 with a 3 on the next possession. Two possessions later, he put Purdue up 48-41 with his fourth 3-pointer of the half.

Moore and Purdue teammates Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson were named to the all-tournament team. Ohio State’s Evan Turner, who led the Buckeyes (22-10) with 22 points in the final, also made the team, along with Illinois forward Mike Davis.

Hummel was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. After averaging 20 points in the first two games of the tournament, Hummel had nine points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in the title game.

He said winning this title was his top basketball highlight.

“It was a great feeling to watch those seconds tick off the clock,‘’ Hummel said. "In my basketball career, I know I’ve won some youth tournaments, but I’ve never really won a championship in a structured, organized basketball league.

“So it feels good.’’
