Mohawk Flush Doors, a subsidiary of Masonite Corp., is ceasing production at its door manufacturing plant in South Bend, laying off 73 employees.

The closure is the result of the continuing decline in U.S. housing starts that has negatively impacted demand for door products, Mohawk said in a notice to the state Department of Workforce Development.

The company anticipate that operations at the plant will be phased out over the next three months and all operations at the facility will cease by the end of January.

Masonite will continue to employ all workers until their separation on Dec. 23.
