Disappointment rains
Rain on Saturday ruined some Fourth of July outdoor activities, including the fireworks display in Downtown Indianapolis, but revelers withstood the damp weather or found other ways to celebrate the holiday.
The Regions Freedom Blast is now scheduled for tonight at the same time and place — 9:47 p.m. from the top of the Regions Bank Tower, 211 N. Pennsylvania St.
Abdellah Azgoune and his wife, Francine, were disappointed they did not get the chance to see the Downtown fireworks show Saturday night.

They were among a much more sparse gathering of fireworks viewers than normal Downtown for the holiday, due to the persistent rainfall. They learned of the announced postponement due to the rain and fog shortly after the display was to have begun.
The couple traveled from Speedway and had been waiting for the show since 5 p.m.
Azgoune, 31, said the event would have marked a symbolic celebration of his arrival to the United States from Morocco.
“I am here one year in the U.S.,” said Azgoune. “I’m disappointed.”
He and Francine said they plan to return today to see the fireworks.
“We want to celebrate independence in the U.S. and celebrate the fact that we are free,” said Francine, 47.
Before the cancellation Brian Chapman, 44, Indianapolis, and his girlfriend, Mary Hampton, 43, Anderson, sat on the steps of the Indiana War Memorial with Chapman’s 4 year-old son, Joshua, waiting for the foggy skies surrounding the Regions building to light up with fireworks.
“We thought that we would brave the elements and see what we were made of,” said Chapman. For Hampton, it would be the first time she would see the display.
“I’m very, very disappointed,” said Hampton.
They, too, said they plan to return for tonight’s display.
The inclement weather also caused the rescheduling of Saturday’s fireworks displays to today in area communities, including Brownsburg, Danville, Mooresville, Zionsville and Franklin.
The fireworks display at Arbuckle Park in Brownsburg is scheduled for dusk. Mooresville’s fireworks at Pioneer Park will be at 6 p.m. and Zionsville’s fireworks at Lion’s Club Park will be at 10 p.m. In Franklin, fireworks at the Indiana Masonic Home will be at 6 p.m., and in Danville at 10 p.m. at Danville High School.
The Symphony on the Prairie and accompanying fireworks at Conner Prairie in Fishers was canceled, said Fishers Fire Department spokesman Ron Lipps.
Fireworks in some communities, including Carmel, Geist and Lawrence, were held Saturday as scheduled.
“It went off without a hitch,” said Carmel city spokeswoman Nancy Heck of the 9:45 p.m. show. “It was great.”
About eight-tenths of an inch of rain fell during the day and night Saturday in unseasonably cool weather as the temperature reached a high of just 70 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
The outlook for today and the early part of next week is better, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, with sunny skies and warm temperatures expected through at least Thursday.
Jason and Nikki Clark came to Indianapolis from Marshall, Ill., with hopes of spending the evening at an Indianapolis Indians game. They were walking down Washington Street under umbrellas with their three children, who were hopeful the skies would clear up in time for the game and the fireworks, both later rescheduled to today due to the persistent rainfall.
The two youngest, Kannon and Mya, both 3, have never seen fireworks.
“Every year we’ve planned a different trip, and every year, it’s rained,” Nikki Clark said.
A trace of precipitation has been recorded on the Fourth of July in the Indianapolis area 53 times in the last 138 years, according to National Weather Service records.
On Monument Circle, a crowd of about 200 gathered for the Independence Day Tea Party, which started with a protest calling for lower taxes and smaller government. They donned ponchos and carried signs with slogans such as, “Government is not Santa Claus,” as they marched down Washington Street to White River State Park, eliciting some supportive honks along the way.
“It’s turning into dependence day instead of Independence Day,” said Trent Wooten, Lawrence. “People want to depend on the government for everything.”
Wooten and others said the rain didn’t deter them, recalling that American Revolution soldiers endured much more daunting conditions.
