The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has staged a sex offender sweep today. The department sent 50 deputies, operating in teams, to ensure sex offenders were complying with the Indiana registry law.

Most of the people checked by deputies were following the law and obeying the terms of registration, said Julio Fernandez, spokesman for the sheriff’s department. Two people were arrested, and the computer belonging to one of them was confiscated so that deputies could check it for child pornography.

Along with the checking of residential addresses, 16 motels were checked to ensure offender lived there as claimed. Deputies served 25 warrants, with five warrants issued for failure to register or giving the wrong address. Sex offenders are required to verify their addresses each year.

“This kind of operation we will do again unannounced,” Fernandez said. “We want to make sure that surprise is on our side.”

Sex offenders, typically those found guilty of offenses such as rape, criminal deviate conduct, child molesting or possession of child pornography, must register with law enforcement if they plan to live or work in Indiana.
