Dali: Painting & Film
Feeling ambitious and adventurous? Book a flight to Los Angeles and visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the "Dali: Painting and Film" exhibition on display until January 6, 2008. A terrific show at a tremendous museum featuring Salvador Dali's collaborations (both realized and unrealized ---though always surrealized) with Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock, Luis Bunuel, Andy Warhol and the Marx Brothers. Dali felt a close affinity with the Hollywood Dream Factories and made it a point to hang out with Harpo Marx, Disney and studio chief Jack Warner. He partied with Bob Hope and Robinson Jeffers(at the same bash!). He gave Harpo a harp strung with barbed wire. Harpo responded with a photo of himself with bandaged fingertips. There are several drawings from the Marx family archives of Dalinian visions of surrealist Marx Brother films, one shows Groucho as a many-armed Shiva multitasking with an array of ringing phones. Snapshots from the Disney family archives show Walt and his wife visiting the Dalis in Spain. Of course, the real highlights of the shows are the brilliant Dali paintings--some sparsely populated with just a mountain and a cloud--and others crowded yet not too busy with a multiplicity of details and double images that boggle and baffle and ultimately reward through repeated viewings. One doesn't passively view this show, it demands crouching, peering, backing up and zooming in, going off to the sides to see the works from a variety of perspectives. If I wanted to stay a little closer to home and get my surrealism on ... what's the IMA got on hand to scratch that itch ... anything?
Doesn't have to be Dali, either (I'm actually a much bigger fan of René Magritte) ... although, if you wanna talk Dali movies, there's always "Un chien andalou", which is always good for around Halloween time.
