The International Violin Competition of Indianapolis will open its 2009-10 Laureate Series Sept. 22 in the Indianapolis Civic Theatre at Marian College, 3200 Cold Spring Road.

The program of small ensembles will culminate in Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat. Performers will be IVCI jury president Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, 1982 silver medalist Ida Kavafian, 1990 bronze medalist Ivan Chan, violist Steven Tenenbom and the Miami String Quartet.

The remaining concerts, which will be at the Indiana History Center, are Nov. 2, Feb. 16, March 21, May 4 and June 8. The Nov. 2 performance will be a centennial tribute to IVCI artistic founder Josef Gingold.

Series subscriptions are $112. Call the IVCI at (317) 637- 4574.

The Jazz on the Point concert series at Eagle Creek Park Marina opens Tuesday with Rob Dixon, and runs for seven consecutive Tuesdays.

The public can bring picnic baskets and blankets, but alcoholic beverages are not permitted. All concerts start at 6 p.m. and last two hours. Admission is free with park entry of $5 per vehicle.
