Violin and winds

The Butler University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Robert Grechesky, will welcome a concertmaster from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as soloist for the first time at a concert Sunday.

Zach De Pue, hired in 2007 to be the ISO’s first-chair first violinist, will play two works for violin and wind ensemble composed by his father, Wallace De Pue, retired professor of composition at Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. The free concert begins at 2 p.m. in Clowes Hall, 4602 Sunset Ave.

The senior De Pue will attend at the end of a mini-residency at Butler that began Wednesday, during which he met with composition students and worked with the wind ensemble. Besides De Pue’s “Serenade” and “The Fiddler’s Contest,” the concert includes the premiere of a new piece by Butler composition student Scott Comanzo.

Phantom finale

The Indiana Ballet Company offers three performances of Alyona Yakovleva’s version of “The Phantom of the Opera” this weekend at the Madame Walker Theatre Center, 617 Indiana Ave. The artistic director’s ballet version of the famous story will be performed at 7:30 p.m. today and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

After three years in the company’s local schedule, the production will be retired in a “Phantom Farewell” costume party with the cast at 9 p.m. at Zing restaurant, 543 Indiana Ave. Tickets for the Zing dinner and show package are $40. The package and other tickets ($15-$25) can be obtained at www.indianaballet company.com or by calling (866) 468-3401.

ISO illusions

Principal pops conductor Jack Everly and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will explore magic and illusions in a symphonic-pops format this weekend at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, 45 Monument Circle.

Concerts at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday will feature magician Joseph Gabriel, comic magicians Les Arnold&Dazzle, quick-change artists David&Dania, and vocalist Christina Bianco. Charles Richard Lester will be featured on the theremin, an electronic instrument with an otherworldly tone. Its pitch changes according to the distance from the player’s hands to a vertical antenna.

The program, titled “Mysterioso,” is the ISO’s latest Symphonic Pops consortium production devised by Everly.

Ticket prices range from $20 to $73 ($24-$46 for the 11 a.m. concert today). Call the box office at (317) 639-4300 or order online at www .indianapolissymphony.org.
