The white board said 33 wall balls, 33 box jumps, 33 double unders (jumping rope double-time), 333 meters on the seated row, three rounds for time, one-minute breaks in between. I stood and watched the first group of three squat and launch 20-pound medicine balls up in the air and tried to talk myself into failing. “It’s ok, your legs are still sore from Saturday, there’s no way to ease yourself back into it, go as long as you can and stop when you need to.” I stretched, opening my hips and squatting, trying to push lactic acid out of my thunder thighs.

But an amazing thing happened when I began the workout – the cramping and tightness and soreness in my legs that had made sitting and standing and walking and climbing and descending stairs painful since Saturday morning simply didn’t matter. I’m pretty sure my legs still hurt – it was hard to tell once everything else started hurting – but the pain was irrelevant because it didn’t hinder my movement. It was simply a mental barrier.

Now, did I perform awesomely? No, I was still 10 minutes off the pace. But I finished the workout and felt better than I did following Saturday’s. I’d give my times but I was so light headed after the workout that I just floated out the door and drove home on auto-pilot.

Pain is an interesting thing – how many times have you let discomfort set a limit on your accomplishments?

Ugh. There is nothing about this that sounds fun. Actually, my body aches just THINKING about it.
