Devan Dumes will not play for the Indiana University basketball team Tuesday night at Minnesota following his indefinite suspension by coach Tom Crean.

Dumes was ejected late in Saturday’s 75-47 loss to Michigan State after receiving a flagrant technical foul for throwing an elbow that made contact with Spartans center Tom Herzog.

Crean waited until after he reviewed the behavior to decide on a punishment Sunday night.

HOOSIERS INSIDER: Crean hands down indefinite suspension

“After coming home and having the opportunity to review the game film, I believe that discipline is necessary and deserved in this matter,‘’ Crean said in a statement released by the school. "A line was crossed that was unacceptable. However, Devan is one of ours and like with all of our players, we want them to learn and understand what it takes to be successful.’’

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany concurred with the suspension. The conference also publicly reprimanded Dumes for his actions, which were in violation of the Big Ten’s Sportslike Conduct Agreement.

“The behavior of Devan Dumes during the Michigan State game is unacceptable,‘’ Delany said in a statement released by the conference. "Dumes’ actions have no place in the sport of basketball or the Big Ten Conference, and we support his indefinite suspension.’’

The elbow Dumes threw that grazed the shoulder of Herzog was one of at least three elbows the IU player threw in the game that made contact with Spartans players. In the first half, Dumes was called for an offensive foul after his elbow made slight contact to the face of Travis Walton.

In the second half, Dumes hit Michigan State’s Goran Suton with an elbow to the mid-section as the players were running down the court. No foul was called on that play, but game officials reviewed video and Crean was told that officials were closely watching Dumes.

Dumes offered an apology in IU’s statement.

“I truly regret my actions and I will learn from this situation,‘’ Dumes said. "I apologize to everyone involved for doing something that is uncharacteristic of how I play the game. I am looking forward to putting this behind me and being a better leader to my teammates.’’

It’s unclear how long Dumes will be suspended. He will miss Tuesday’s game at Minnesota. The next IU game is Sunday at home against Illinois. The statement said he would continue to practice and travel with the team.
