PORTLAND, Ind. — Authorities say a northeastern Indiana man whose body was found burned beyond recognition in his apartment set the fire himself to commit suicide.

Jay County Coroner Mark Barnett said Friday that he’s ruled 30-year-old Jeremiah R. Powell’s March 11 death a suicide based on police and fire officials’ findings and autopsy results.

Powell’s body was found in a bedroom that also contained evidence of flammable liquids.

After his death, police found a suicide note in Powell’s car. Barnett says Powell, a convicted felon released from prison last year, had been depressed.

He says Powell suffered smoke and soot inhalation and massive burns in the fire about 40 miles south of Fort Wayne. His body was identified with dental records.
