'Compliment Guys' shower Circle with good vibes
No one who crossed Brett Westcott and Cameron Brown’s paths on Monument Circle this morning went without some form of positive recognition.
“I like your red jacket; you’ve got a great style,” they said toa woman on her way to work.
“I like your black coat; you look very professional,” a man was told.
“Sir, I like your mustache,” they said to a man in an army-fatigue patterned jacket who was rolling a shopping cart down the sidewalk.
The duo, known as the Compliment Guys, began handing out free compliments in September for two hours a week at Purdue University, where both are sophomores. Today they brought their routine, which has garnered them admiration on campus, as well as national media attention, to Indianapolis for an hour and a half of morning cheer.
“There’s something good in everybody,” said Brown, 19, Toledo, Ohio. “It just takes half a second to pick it out.”
This morning, they picked out something for everyone in sight. Standing on the Circle’s northwest quadrant, they handed out compliments to pedestrians, then turned to address commuters driving through the Circle — yelling so they could hear the remarks through their car windows.
“I like your green car,” they said to a woman in an compact Mazda.
“I’ll sell it to you!” she shouted back with a smile.
Most recipients of the pair’s comments reacted with similar gratitude, mixed with surprise. Some stared back blankly. Others said they suspected the guys were trying to sell something; they were delighted to find out that wasn’t the case.
“Going around and complimenting people for no good reason is a very good thing. I hope more people get into the habit,” said John Riordan, 35, who was on his way from a coffee shop to his office at Market Tower when the guys told him he was “looking great today.”
“It gave me a little boost in the morning.”
