Jerraud Powers will become the first rookie cornerback to start a season opener for the Indianapolis Colts in nearly two decades.

Coach Jim Caldwell confirmed today that the team’s third-round draft pick is expected to start in place of right-side starter Marlin Jackson on Sunday when the Colts open the season against Jacksonville in Lucas Oil Stadium.

“If he does start, he won’t be the first (rookie) to start in this league,” Caldwell said.
But Powers would be the first rookie corner to start a season opener for the Colts since Ashley Ambrose in 1992. The team has liked Powers’ potential since they first day he stepped on the practice field.

“The skill level was there,” Caldwell said. “He’s a mature individual for his age. And he’s all business. You could see he certainly had the makings of someone that, if things fell right, could come in and have an impact.”

Jackson, the right-side starter the past two seasons, will primarily cover the slot receiver in the nickel package until he’s fully recovered from surgery on his right knee.

Silva out

Safety Jamie Silva will not play Sunday against the Jaguars because of an abdominal injury. Tight end Tom Santi (ankle) also is out.
