Cityhood for Fishers likely to go to a vote
Fishers — A group that wants Fishers to become a city says it has gathered enough signatures on a petition to bring the proposed switch to voters.
Greg Purvis, who leads the City Yes political action committee, said the group has collected more than 2,000 signatures. The group is legally required to get at least 1,443 if it wants to put the city question on the ballot.
The Hamilton Southeastern school referendum last week helped the group exceed the legal requirement. Purvis said City Yes volunteers went to polling sites, where about 1,000 voters signed the petition.
The city issue likely will go to voters at the May 2010 primary.
Purvis said Fishers needs to become a city because its population is approaching 70,000, and town government works best for smaller communities.
But Town Council President Scott Faultless disagrees. He said cityhood means larger government and higher taxes but said it’s voters’ prerogative to take it to a vote.
