City Market event marks Earth Day
As pigeons glided over the City Market plaza searching for food, people strolled through that same plaza, looking for environmentally sound ways to live during Earth Day.
“We try to pay attention to the good things that are going on,” said John Gibson, executive director of Earth Charter Indiana, an organization that is trying to get people to live greener lives. “We discover people who are into sustainability. Some of these people feel isolated, and we try to connect with them.”

The low-key event during the noon hour today came on the 39th anniversary of the first Earth Day observance. Organizations such as the Hoosier Environmental Council, which is spending this week lobbying for bills at the end of the legislative session, joined with a few vendors who displayed recycled and natural products for sale. One environmental change encouraged by city government could be found a few blocks to the north: recently-painted bicycle lanes on the busy one-way Michigan and New York Streets. Those lanes will be inaugurated on by Mayor Greg Ballard on May 16, one day after commuters are encouraged to ride their bicycles to work.“Indianapolis is fairly bicycle friendly,” said Nancy Tibbett of the Indiana Bicycle Coalition, who has been working to get motorists and bicyclists to share the roads. “There’s an occasional incident, but for the most part it’s pretty encouraging.”The environmental message also was carried by several Indianapolis city departments who were concerned with public health. Representatives of the city health department displayed a jar of live, wriggling mosquito larvae that had been collected in Marion County, warning that increasing daylight and warmer temperatures would soon lead to the first mosquito crop of the season. People worried about mosquitoes breeding in standing, stagnant water can call 221-7440 for assistance.
