Even thought she dissed Indianapolis by skipping out on her Radio Radio show when a gig opened up in Chicago, when I saw folk singer Alela Davis' song on a music blog, I decided to download and check it out. And, yes, I was pleasantly surprised.

I put the song on a mix cd, and my girlfriend fell in love with it, so I picked up the album, "The Pirates Gospel," at Indy CD and Vinyl. Dreamy acoustic guitar with the occasional piano and banjo create a spacey yet lush background. Davis' voice is reminiscent of Beth Orton, with a tad more emotion present. The best moments come from the delicate harmonies that her 8 year old cousin provide.

Her songwriting shy's away from catchiness, opting to create an even atmosphere that is extremely relaxing and contemplative. We've let this album lull us to a beautiful sleep for many nights, now.

I just hope Indy get their just due next tour through.
