Since 2004, Rock For Riley has hosted concerts by everyone from My Morning Jacket and Neko Case to the Whigs and Wilco to raise cash for Riley Hospital for Children.

The nonprofit will put on another philanthropic rock show this week, bringing two '60s-influenced Chicago bands to Birdy's Bar & Grill.

The Redwalls pack a British Invasion-influenced pop punch, while Catfish Haven serves up foot-stomping acoustic rock fronted by soulful vocals reminiscent of Otis Redding.

Indy.com recently spoke to both bands about their influences, their Indy connections and more.

The Redwalls

What's a band that's been accused of aping the Beatles to do? If you're the Redwalls, you strike back in song.

The Redwalls call out their critics in their 2007 single "Modern Diet."

"They say it's all been done before," lead vocalist Logan Baren sings, "And there's really nothing new / I guess that's just your point of view."

According to bassist Justin Baren (Logan's brother), critics who vilify the band for borrowing from the Beatles and other "British Invasion" bands are even less original than their intended target.

"We obviously love those bands," he said. "The only thing we don't get is why people think it's so smart to bring it up."

The band's Rock for Riley date is its second Indy appearance in six months. This time, the drummer will be Robbie Jensen, who replaced Ben Greeno late last year. Guitarist Andrew Langer rounds out the line-up.

Catfish Haven

Catfish Haven was supposed to join the Redwalls for the duration of the current tour. But an unfortunate set of circumstances -- an uncooperative touring van, an ice-inflicted back injury, a cash shortage -- forced the band to stay in Chicago.

The band will play the Indy date anyway, though, thanks both to the good cause and the group's relationship with Bloomington-based label Secretly Canadian, which released Catfish Haven's debut album in 2006.

"We love coming to Indiana, because we have so many friends there," lead singer George Hunter said.

Hunter said attendees will hear tracks from the group's forthcoming album, tentatively titled "Devastator."

"The girlfriends (of the band members) don't really like it," Hunter said of the title. "But we love it. This record feels more like a statement than ever. Plus, I loved all of those classic rock 'n' roll album titles like 'Transformer' and 'Revolver.'"

While Hunter, bassist Miguel Castillo and drummer Ryan Farnham are the only official members of Catfish Haven, they'll likely bring along a team of contributors.

"We are starting to enlist some new players," he said. "We'll probably bring at least someone on keys, and hopefully we'll have a nice six- !or seven-piece band."
