HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves walked away from a significant crash today at Homestead-Miami Speedway as practice for Saturday’s season-ending IndyCar Series race, the Firestone Indy 300, continues.

Qualifying is later today.

Castroneves had a failure in the left rear corner of his car before spinning and slamming the Turn 2 wall. He was slow to get out of the car, but he walked away.

Castroneves was following IndyCar title hopeful — and teammate — Ryan Briscoe with 3 minutes left in the practice when the crash occurred.

Briscoe was second in the afternoon practice to fellow title challenger, Scott Dixon, who set the pace at 212.906 mph. Dario Franchitti was third.

Dixon leads Franchitti by five points and Briscoe by eight. Winning the pole is worth one point. Fifty-two additional points will be available to a driver in Saturday’s race, which begins at 5 p.m.
