Carmel gives $458,000 to arts
CARMEL — Officials have given out $458,975 to Carmel arts organizations.
The Carmel City Council on Monday night approved the disbursement from the Carmel Support the Arts Fund.

Mayor Jim Brainard put together the list of organizations that he deemed worthy of the money, as well as the money they deserved, and submitted it to the council. In the past, Brainard could decide on his own how to distribute the funds, but last year the council changed the process, giving them the final say.Joe Griffiths voted against the measure, Kevin Rider abstained due to a conflict of interest while the other five City Council members supported the resolution.The organizations and their grants are:>>Actors Theatre of Indiana: $35,000.>>Carmel Arts Council: $58,000.>>Carmel Brass: $10,000.>>Carmel Symphony Orchestra: $175,000.>>Masoomeh Ardalan (for the final payment for the sculpture located at 258 W. Main St.): $29,975.>>Chinese Arts: $1,000.>>City Center Children’s Theatre: $35,000.>>Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre: $15,000.>>International Talent Academy: $15,000.>>Carmel Repertory Players: $70,000.>>Carmel Fountain Square: $15,000.After the checks are cashed, there will be $18,525 remaining in the fund, according to the clerk-treasurer’s office. The city has already spent $213,500 from the fund earlier this year as the annual payment for J. Seward Johnson statues. Many of those statues are already scattered around the Arts&Design District, while others are in storage, waiting to be installed.
