Carmel gallery to host 2 artists during today's Walk event
Evan Lurie has a longstanding admiration for the work of artist Jorge Santos.
Lurie has worked with Santos for 10 years, often showcasing his artwork at his galleries.
Santos will present a lecture today at the Evan Lurie Gallery in Carmel, as part of a gallery showcase featuring realism and neorealism artwork. The Lurie showcase, from 5 to 10 p.m., is part of tonight’s Gallery Walk in the Carmel Arts&Design District.
“We really want people to come out and see something spectacular,” Lurie said. “He’s an amazing artist. He’s collected by many celebrities, including Scarlet Johansen.”
Lurie said the new artwork would include a piece that is a tribute to the Indianapolis 500.
“He does large-scale pieces,” Lurie said. “People are shocked when they see the pieces are four-by-five feet.”
Santos, who grew up in Portugal and now lives in New Mexico, has had his work on the covers of magazines such as Juxtapose and American Art Collector.
The showcase also will include a lecture by New York-based sculptor Stephen Shaheen.
The Lurie exhibit opens today and will remain on display through May 20. The exhibit also will include new artwork from Spanish surrealistic artist Arnau Alemany and Drew Simpson, who has done some miniature paintings.
Lectures will begin at 1 p.m. with Santos, followed by Shaheen at 2:30 p.m. The lectures are free and open to the public.
“It’s a chance for the public to go piece-by-piece with the artist,” said Katherine Livengood, Evan Lurie Gallery’s manager.
