Carmel Clay Public Library welcomes patrons to tour improved facilities next week
The Carmel Clay Public Library is wrapping up a big anniversary with a week dedicated to its patrons.
“This year has been 10th anniversary of being in this building,” said Beth Smietana, the library’s communications manager.
“In May we did a big celebration," she said. "To end the year, we’re doing another celebration.”
The library’s Patron Appreciation Week will begin Monday and last through Nov. 15.
It is meant to celebrate the 10 years the library has been in its location, at 55 4th Ave. SE, Carmel. The library started in 1904 and is in its fourth location, Smietana said.
“Over the past few months, starting in April, we’ve been remodeling the inside of the building and the parking lot,” she said.
“One of our big focuses (during the week) are our tours of the new areas. People can see the new patron areas and the behind-the-scenes staff areas."
During the tours or while exploring on their own, visitors will get to see some newly repurposed areas, such as a new room created for book discussion groups and the new tween area in the children’s department.
“That’s a big demographic these days – middle school age,” Smietana said. “There is funky seating and funky lighting and materials for their age group.”
There is also a new interactive feature in the early childhood department that provides learning games for very young children, she said.
The schedule for the guided tours is:
*Monday: 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
*Tuesday: 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
*Wednesday: 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
*Nov. 12: 10 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
*Nov. 13: Noon and 5 p.m.
*Nov. 14: Noon and 3:30 p.m.
During the week, there will also be several events, including specials at the Friends Library Bookstore and the Monon Coffee&Sweets, as well as a library-wide scavenger hunt and a sculpture exhibit, according to a Carmel Clay Public Library release.
“We want to roll everything out and reacquaint people with what the library is about,” Smietana said.
“The library is getting heavily used with the bad economy. We want to remind people what their library is about and what free things we offer,” she said.
On Nov. 14, children will be entertained by Marc&Max the Moose at 11 a.m. in the program room. The event is free, and tickets will be available starting Saturday at the children’s desk or online at www.carmel.lib.in.us, according to the news release.
Lectures will be given for those who are interested in learning more about the library, its benefits and the future of libraries.
The “Radloff Endowment Series: Building a Great Library for Your Community” will he held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 with speaker Jeff Scherer, the design architect of the library.
On the last day of the celebratory week, The Dolce Trio — made up of flute, violin and cello players — will perform between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the program room
