Caldwell: Colts find ‘ways to win’
Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell’s review of the film from the Colts’ 18-14 victory on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium reaffirmed two things: The Colts beat the San Francisco 49ers, and they had a tough time doing it.
“We just couldn’t get in sync like we normally do but I think the good thing is we find different ways to win and I think you have to do that in this league,” Caldwell said Monday.
“Winning one game is difficult and winning in this league requires that you find ways to win when things might not be going very well and things weren’t going well for us consistently and yet we still were able to work through it.”
The Colts (7-0) had won their previous four games by a 138-42 margin.
They will be back in action Sunday against Houston (5-3) in an important AFC South game.
Caldwell said he could provide no prognoses on injuries that prevented cornerback Kelvin Hayden (knee) and linebacker Tyjuan Hagler (elbow) from finishing the game or running back Donald Brown (shoulder) from playing in it.
Of the possibility of cornerback Marlin Jackson (knee) returning this week after missing the past three games, Caldwell said, “Yes, there is a chance, but I’m not real certain of that.”
If the Colts are without Hayden and Jackson, they will face Houston’s Matt Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson, one of the NFL’s better quarterback-wide receiver combinations with a cornerback corps consisting of rookies Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey, reserve Tim Jennings and T.J. Rushing, who is primarily a return man.
