Brownsburg takes Comer back to top

Sectional title is school’s 1st since coach played there in 1985

AVON, Ind. — As a head coach, Brett Comer had been waiting four years — four years of training, of tweaking, of building Brownsburg High School’s football team into what it once was.

As a former Brownsburg player, though, Comer had been waiting longer. Twenty years longer, to be exact.

Now, the wait is over. Nearly 21/2 decades after Brownsburg last won a sectional title — back in 1985, when Comer was on the team and the Bulldogs eventually won the state championship — the Bulldogs finally claimed another trophy, this time by beating Hendricks County rival Avon 42-14 on the road Friday in the Class 5A Sectional 6 final.

“I don’t think I can put (it) into words right now,” Comer said, before simply adding: “It means a lot. It means a lot.”

Brownsburg earned a home regional matchup against No. 3 Warren Central (10-2) next week.

Of course, Comer said, the win not only belongs to all of Brownsburg, but to the players themselves — the ones who spent time in the fourth-year staff’s system and helped the Bulldogs (9-3) go from three wins (in 2006) to four (2007) to five (last year) to the current nine. Because those players have been strong all season, and were nearly dominant from the start on Friday.

After trading three-and-outs to begin the game, Brownsburg drove 78 yards and scored on a 9-yard run by junior quarterback Robby Robbins with 1:54 left in the first. Four plays later, a misplayed Avon pitch was recovered by Jake Wojcik and returned deep into Avon territory — a “monster” play, Comer called it.

Five plays later, Robbins scored again to make it 14-0 early in the second. The Bulldogs stretched that lead to 21-0 at halftime and 28-0 into the fourth quarter, before Avon finally scored with 10:57 left.

“We knew that we had to come out hard,” Robbins said, “because Avon’s a great team. They’ve got some athletes that can make plays. We just came out and got them early. Didn’t look back.”

Said Avon coach Dave Shelbourne, whose team ended the season 5-7: “They just outplayed us tonight. They played awfully, awfully well on a night where we didn’t play our best game.”

Robbins accounted for five touchdowns, four rushing, and finished with 104 yards on the ground and 162 through the air. Senior Darryl Jordan rushed for 103 yards and the game’s final score.

“They’ve waited for it for a while,” Comer said. “I’ve waited for it for a long time.”
