Broad Ripple bar faces civil rights violation

A Broad Ripple bar with a dress code that prohibits gang attire, loose-fitting pants, single-color T-shirts, chains worn outside of one’s shirt and hair picks is unfairly targeting minority patrons, the Indiana Civil Rights Commission said today.

The seven-member commission said probable cause exists that Landsharks, 810 Broad Ripple Ave., violated Indiana Civil Rights Law.

“Relying on precedent from employment discrimination cases, the deputy director’s position is that Landsharks could implement policies with a less discriminatory impact to achieve its legitimate business goals of ensuring a peaceful and fun atmosphere,” the commission said in a news release this afternoon.

Landsharks’ Web site, www.land-sharks.com , lists what customers can and cannot wear — including no “grills” and chains must be “tucked in.”

If a settlement with the commission is not reached, a public hearing could be held before an administrative law judge and a final order could be issued by the commission, the release said.

Here is the full dress code, from Landsharks’ Web site:

“In order to maintain the integrity of our private establishment and a peaceful, fun atmosphere for ALL patrons, Landsharks will implement the following dress code:

“We reserve the right to deny entry to any possible patron at our discretion

“No baseball caps or visors (unless promo)

“No athletic gear of any sort

“No recognized gang attire

“No ‘grills’

“All chains must be tucked in

“No saggy pants, jean shorts or shorts below the knee.

“Pants MUST be worn at waist

“Any patron perceived to be intoxicated will be denied entry

“No plain tee of any sort or color

“You must have sleeves

“No combs or picks in hair

“No oversize clothes or long tees

“Management has empowered our door staff to refuse entry based on the above criteria or based on demeanor at their discretion.”
