Blood on their fanatic
At the funeral of murdered Wichita doctor George Tiller, a group of protesters gathered outside the church, a woman in sunglasses front-and-center. She wore an American flag skirt, with a sign “God Hates Fags” emblazoned across her chest. Among the posters sprouting from the crowd behind her, several said, “God Sent The Shooter.”
President Barack Obama came to the University of Notre Dame and gave the most thoughtful speech on abortion that I’ve ever heard — how we must all work to diminish the number of abortions and seek to speak about the issue with fair-minded words. And this is what he got. Scott Roeder, previously convicted of a weapons charge and a member of the radical Army of God anti-abortion group, is charged with assassinated Dr. Tiller in his church.
God sent the shooter? How sick and twisted is this? But they truly believe it.
Lamenting that there have been only five abortionists killed since Roe v. Wade, columnist Ann Coulter wrote, “I wouldn’t kill an abortionist myself. But I wouldn’t want to impose my moral values on others.” Coulter added: “If you don’t believe in shooting abortionists, then don’t shoot one.”
But if you do believe abortionists should be shot, then what, Ms. Coulter?
Coulter’s ideological compatriot is Bill O’Reilly, the face of Fox News. For the truly vile-crazy sector of his viewership, O’Reilly called attention to “Tiller the baby killer” 40 times in the past four years. Planting the seeds of hatred, he intoned over and over that Tiller was running “a Nazi-style death mill.”
“If only I could get my hands on Tiller,” muttered the bold and glaring O’Reilly.
And when someone finally did it? “No backpedaling here,” claimed O’Reilly, “everything we said about Tiller was true!” Then pedaling furiously backward, he disclaimed any personal responsibility for what happened in Tiller’s church, saying he was only “reporting on what others had said.” What a weaselly, phony, cowardly fraud!
Randall Terry, founder of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, raced to the National Press Club to grab a microphone and proclaim, “George Tiller was a mass murderer. I believe he was one of the most evil men on the planet. Tiller reaped what he sowed.”
This axis of evil, O’Reilly, Coulter and Terry, are the co-religionists of those who maintain “The Nuremberg Files,” another incendiary anti-abortion outfit, listkeepers of what they call “baby butchers.” When an abortion doctor is murdered, his name is crossed off.
Bill O’Reilly did everything he could short of putting a target on George Tiller’s back. And, if what Ann Coulter said about shooting an abortionist is not an invitation for one of her twisted, God-soaked followers to cross off another one, what is it about?
As for Obama’s conciliatory speech at Notre Dame, the only fair-minded words Coulter could muster were these: “How about for next year’s graduation ceremony, Notre Dame have an abortionist perform an abortion on stage?”
Only one among the far-right community of zealots had the courage to admit culpability in George Tiller’s fate. Frank Schaeffer, who worked-up the anti-abortion crowd for years and wrote a book called, “Crazy for God,” owned up to the truth. Saying he’d been part of the Republican Party’s hate machine for years, he added, “We helped create the climate that made this much more likely to happen. Words are spoken that lead directly to violence by the unhinged or the truly committed.”
Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter and Randall Terry are still in that business, though they would deny responsibility for the evil act they have worked for years to precipitate. In fact, they are spokespersons for an American Taliban, using their media pulpits to promote what can only be called domestic terrorism, with neither the courage nor the humanity to admit their culpability.
After Dr. Tiller’s funeral, when the demonstrators with their crucifixes and “God Sent The Shooter” signs had disbanded, David Gittrich of Kansans for Life promised, “If the clinic reopens, we are the Minutemen, we’ll be there.” Call O’Reilly, Coulter and Randall Terry to the cause! Lock and load.
