Danville High School students are making blankets to sell, that will also help a good cause.

Students in Mike Neilson’s economic classes are creating knot blankets from fleece material. The class came up with the idea and has been selling the blankets, most with sports themes, since before Christmas.

They’ve added a new breast cancer awareness blanket, and profits from sales will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

All of the students have jobs such as marketing, advertising, accounting and sales, Neilson said. It helps the children learn about economics in a hands-on way instead of just using a text book.

“They get into those roles, and they take it very seriously,” Neilson said.

Neilson started a similar project last semester, and those students built and sold cornhole beanbag toss games.

“It’s more stressful than we thought it would be,” said Lindsay Kunkle, 18. “We’ve had to keep organized and wait on the fabric.”

Despite the stress, students say they’ve learned a lot about economics through the hands-on activity.

Blankets, which range from $25 to $40 depending on design and size, can be ordered through Feb. 6. Visit www.danville.k12.in.us or call (317) 745-6431, ext. 222 for more information.
