Best music covers

Since remakes seem to be a hot topic of discussion here on Indy.com lately, I figured I'd ask my fellow indy.comrades: what are your favorite music covers? Any genre will do. I'll go ahead and start it off with the following two:

Caetano Veloso - Billie Jean
Gary Jules and Michael Andrews - Mad World

I like the originals of both theses songs as well, but I feel that the mood of the covers are more fitting with the lyrics.

I've always been a big fan of "Tribute" albums, so to name the best covers I couldn't do, there's just too many.

Although Devil To Pay's version of Black Sabbath's "INTO THE VOID" was pretty spot on last Friday.

Elvis Costello's version of Love For Sale always gets me. For that matter, Elvis Costello's version of anything. He's recorded a lot of covers.

The Foo Fighters version of Baker Street is absolutely my fav. At least until I can convince Weezer to cover Baba O'Riley.

Good choices! I'll have to check out those that I haven't heard of. Here are a couple more that I love:

Johny Cash - NIN's Hurt
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere over the Rainbow

Noice. I already used that one on here, though, on a different post. :)

And Ben, I actually was going to put my son's first favorite song on here(JC's "Hurt"). Johnny Cash is an immortal. I remember Justin Timberlake saying it was a travesty he won best album or song or whatever at the MTV Music Awards because his song was chosen over "Hurt."

It's an amazing song. Great video too.

Elf Power's cover of Brian Eno's "Needle In The Camel's Eye." Any bonus points for quality and/or obscurity?

Any version Guided By Voices did of The Who's "Baba O'Riley" is essential.

I'm a little disappointed by how obvious most of these selections are. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by a town that will sell out Jimmy Buffett for putting on the exact same show he has for the past 20 years.

Cake's cover of "War Pigs" is mediocre at best. Sorry, just stating the obvious. Why do you people have such low standards? Get out of your box and challenge your conventions, will ya?!

My Morning Jacket's sincere version of Erykah Badu's "Tyrone" is also stellar, as are pretty much any of their covers.

What's the difference between a cover and a remake?

I really like Shaw/Blades version of "Your Move" by Yes...actually I like the whole CD "Under the Influence" lots of "oldies"(I can relate!)

So that's Cake I kept hearing all weekend on X103 doing "Warpigs?" God that version is just awful, Not even close to the original, and certainly not as headbanging.

JC's One & Hurt.......perfect, forgot about these.

The (Dweezil & Ahmet) Zappas' cover of "Hit me Baby One More Time" always made me smile. And I"ll second any cover done by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
