Barefoot coach honored for charity effort
IUPUI men’s basketball coach Ron Hunter was honored by the National Basketball Coaches Association for his work with Samaritan’s Feet.
Hunter received a Guardians of the Game Pillar Award during the Final Four in Detroit this past weekend. Hunter has coached games barefoot to raise awareness of Samaritan’s Feet, a charity that donates shoes to impoverished children domestically and internationally.
Hunter first coached barefoot on Jan. 24, 2008, and later took a trip with several of his players and assistant coaches to Peru to donate the shoes to needy children.Samaritan’s Feet held a shoe distribution in Detroit this past weekend during the Final Four.
Hunter will be recognized April 29 at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The ISO will perform barefoot to raise money for Samaritan’s Feet.

Ron Hunter is awesome. Never forget the time I was at a basketball movie that the IUPUI basketball team attended (I think it was “Glory Road”), and Ron Hunter was walking out with someone else while I was waiting for my panelists. Coach Hunter looked at me and said “How you doin’?” I said “Hey, Coach.”
As they passed, the guy walking with him said “who was that?” And Coach Hunter said “he’s the guy who does the movie reviews.”
It was AWWWWESOME.
