Birdseye — A bald eagle that appeared in Indiana Department of Natural Resources shows at the Indiana State Fair and state parks for many years has died.

The agency says the eagle died Tuesday while undergoing surgery for an ailment. It was about 22 years old and lived most its life in captivity at the Patoka Lake Visitors Center near Birdseye in Southern Indiana. The eagle was named C52 for its identification tag number.

The eagle came to Lake Monroe from its nest in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska in July 1988. It was to be released in the wild, but a damaged wing reduced its ability to survive outside captivity.

The bird’s remains were sent to the National Eagle Repository in Commerce City, Colo., in keeping with federal law.
