Atheists decry beliefs, but they have their own

How apt that the subjects of The Star’s front-page story on Sept. 12 should be described as religious skeptics: It’s clear that these skeptics are just as religious about their beliefs as those they enjoy berating (“Religious skeptics have faith their voices will be heard”). When will these dear people realize that what they zealously preach is not a religion-free world, but yet another option for the American religious smorgasbord?

Lamenting religion’s death toll, one atheist remarks, “the problem with belief is that people tend to act upon it.” Well, what about the belief of secularism? The French revolutionaries, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin didn’t just “imagine no religion;” they attempted it, with devastating consequences. If our atheist friends resent the comparison, they understand well our feelings at being compared to the Taliban and other such extremists.

People of faith should greet the new ad campaign with pity, but also a smirk at the irony. Perhaps someone should also sue them for false advertising.
