A Marion County judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of a man accused of attacking an Indiana State Police trooper Monday during a traffic stop on Indianapolis’ Far Southside.

Prosecutors this afternoon filed felony charges of battery, resisting law enforcement and being a habitual traffic violator against Michael L. Kessler, 48.

Kessler was stopped in his wife’s 2005 Toyota pickup by the trooper after midnight Monday at Winchester and Xenia streets on suspicion of driving drunk, according to a probable cause affidavit. Trooper Ginger Marshall reported that he fled from the truck, the affidavit says; after she took him down and cuffed one wrist, Kessler choked her and punched the back of her head before escaping.

Police discovered Kessler’s business cards inside the truck, which the affidavit says is registered to his wife. A Marion Superior Court judge issued the warrant for Kessler today and set bond at $100,000. Anyone with information about Kessler’s location is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS.

Kessler faces a Class C felony charge of operating a motor vehicle after forfeiting his license for life. He was convicted of the same charge in Marion Superior Court in 2007, records show.

“This incident is just another example of how law enforcement officers place their lives at risk to protect our community every day,” Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said in a news release. “We are very fortunate that Trooper Marshall was not seriously injured during the attack.”
