When Jason Damron took over the Mooresville girls soccer team in 2002, he just wanted to get students involved in the sport. Now, with game-tested players entering the program as freshmen, Damron has them winning — helping earn him the 2009 All-West Girls Soccer Coach of the Year award.

Damron’s Pioneers went 15-2-2 this season, setting program records for regular season and overall number of victories. Mooresville also came within one game of claiming the school’s first girls soccer sectional championship, before falling 1-0 to Center Grove (which entered the year having won 14 straight sectional titles).

Mooresville did it this year with a prolific offense (104 goals scored) and a stifling defense (just 10 allowed), thanks to several talented players — among them senior midfielder and Central Michigan University commit Estee Outcalt (26 goals, 12 assists), freshman forward Logan Bowling (20 goals, eight assists), sophomore forward Hannah Jones (17 goals, seven assists) and senior defender Carla Ronan.

“Having all those players obviously makes my job a lot easier,” Damron said.
