The Ben Davis High School girls golf team came close in Saturday’s regional at Smock Golf Course but couldn’t advance to the state meet.

The Giants placed fifth — seven shots shy of the third and final team qualifying spot.

The Giants shot 359, led by Kristen Fitzgerald (86) and Chelsea Mattingly (87). Katie Kirschner (90), Brittany Mosteller (96) and Abby Mattingly (97) also competed for Ben Davis, which came in behind third-place Shelbyville (352) and fourth-place Zionsville (354). Ben Davis’ top three finishers are juniors, while Nos. 4 and 5 are sophomores.

The top three individuals on nonqualifying teams also advanced to state, with 80 the cutoff at Smock. Decatur Central’s Courtney Martin (81) came close, and teammate Anna Munn (93) also played in the regional.
