A New The Trews Fan After Last Night
I like the Rathskeller. Maybe it's because of my own German heritage or possibly the assortment of beers the place offers speaks to my beer aficionado side. Either way, the place is unique and much more fun than the booty shaking, beat box clubs. So I was totally pumped when a friend from Terre Haute was coming to visit me here in Indy and the Rathskeller booked a rock band for a show. Well, in the course of 24 hours I went from being stoked to plain being bummed when my buddy couldn't even get to Indy from Terre Haute because of the Great Flood of 2008 (seriously, I can't wait to tell my grandchildren about that one). So what's a guy to do on such short notice. No friends to call on because most have made plan, or were waist deep in God's tears. Piss on it. It's Rock N Roll. You don't need an entourage to enjoy it. So I traveled the short distance downtown and took in what this strange new band from the Great North had to offer. Let me tell you folks. If you weren't there, you missed something pretty spectacular.
The Trews. I've been burned too many times going to a place that advertised a band, only to get some jam band that did little more than drone on for hours without so much as finishing one song. So, I was happy this band had a MySpace page and a bunch of YouTube vids. I went to the Rathskeller fully prepared. I'd done my research. Heck, they had a couple of catchy tunes I was excited to hear. They did not let me down either. I could go in a hundred different directions here, but I'll keep it pretty concise. They were phenomenal. Great live performance. It was obvious from the start that the crowd wasn't sure what it was in for. The band started their set with little support from the crowd. But put forth a very high energy performance, played great songs, and by the end, I didn't see a soul that was sitting. Everyone was jamming by the end. Kudos to the Canucks! I thought it took a lot of guts to include a drum solo in a set that was going very well and, due to the Rathskeller live music time constraints, would end promptly at eleven. But they pulled it off. The Trews are truly a talented group of musicians, from vocals to rhythm to guitars, and I can only imagine that this is the last time Indy will have the chance to see them live for free. They made a fan of me, I'm sure with others in attendance. It's a shame that you missed it.
