As the saying goes, a little chrome goes a long way in shining up a lousy Monday. And, if that really is the case, Hayden and I were giddy beyond recognition as we visited Stars Sandwich Market, Downtown.
The rich royal purple, blinding chrome accents and stupid amount of reflective surfaces makes this wee breakfast/lunch spot appear much larger... and funhouse-like. Futuristic, perhaps. Either way, it's cool.
I thought the newly renovated City Market, across the street, might be tough competition for this spot, but if you build delicious sandwiches, they will come.
No menu here; you choose your sandwiches from a refrigerated glass case. I kind of liked that -- a decent amount of choices without having to wait. Monday is not a day for patience.
I settled on a turkey mozz ($4.49). Real, thickly sliced (like, not weird lunch-meat sliced) turkey, mozzarella, tomato, crisp romaine and delicious basil pesto sauce held their own against a flavorful tomato focaccia roll.
Hayden chose the meaty Vinny ($5.19) -- cappicolla, Genoa salami, provolone, onion, lettuce and a roasted garlic sauce, on an Italian roll.
I wanted to trade. Maybe half a sandwich, at least. C'mon! No dice.
So, after our sides of cottage cheese (75 cents) and dill and sour cream potato salad ($1.25), I enjoyed a fresh oatmeal raisin cookie ($1.05), all to myself.
Refreshing, life-giving, sparkling (but not carbonated) water.
I would visit again, just to get my girls-like-shiny-things fix. Thankfully, though, there's also food where that comes from.

Wow, how many of these do you do a week? You have a tough job
Just one! It is tough, randydaytona. Tough on my waistline.
I'll definitely have to try this place. It looks like Barney the dinosaur exploded on a '57 Chevy or something.
