Thanks to a friend my husband and I were lucky enough to go to the opening night festivities for the Heartland Film Festival. The evening started with cocktails followed by a seated dinner at the Eiteljorg Museum. The wine was freely poured and I was very happy to partake. The Film chosen to kick of the festivities was August Rush. A film starring Keri Russell, Robin Williams, and Jonathan Rhys Meyer to name a few. The producer of the film Richard Barton Lewis was in attendance, along with his wife and young son. They did not arrive until dinner was nearly over. This was all juicily dramatic because as it turns out all of their luggage was incinerated when their plane's cargo hold caught on fire. Thank goodness to Nordstrom's for outfitting the whole family in brand new movie premier duds. After dinner we made our way to the IMAX theater for the movie. After a touching speech by the producer we sat back an enjoyed the show. The movie is a story of love and loss. There are only 60 seconds in the whole film that are not filled with music. The plot revolves around a boy who hears music in his head constantly and he believes that everyone else does too. He is a musical prodigy, but sadly he lives in an orphanage where he is persecuted. He escapes and falls into the hands of a crazy cook played by Robin Williams. I always enjoy when R.W. is the antagonist! The movie was implausible at times but over all left the viewer warm and fuzzy. I highly suggest seeing this film. Especially after consuming free wine!
I saw it at Heartland too, also in Chicago. One of the "problems" of attending many festivals is the same films keep popping up. Now, you realize I am kidding. It's nice to see a film in different venues with a different group. Or taking the chance to see something else because you already "did that". Because most festivals (Heartland included) have some many entries you can't see them all.
Rhys Mayer has done some movies I really liked, i.e. Tangled w/Rachael Leigh Cook, and Match Point.
And of course Keri Russell in Waitress and now August Rush has shown herself to be a fine actress with good judgement about roles to take.
It opens next week!!!!!!
