Cars and semi's don't mix!

I recently took a roadtrip to Tennessee. Now, I travel alot. My job requires it. But this roadtrip really opened my eyes as to just how crowded the major highways in this country have become.

I-65 is a major N-S corridor for travel East of the Mississippi. I normally don't travel this highway and spend most of my time going East and West on lesser travelled roads.

This highway has reached its carryting capacity! It is dangerous! With that in mind I have a few thoughts:

  1. Trucks (semi's) are absolutely necessary for commerce in the US.

  2. Non-commerce traffic, namely individual autos, trucks and motorcycles is also absolutely vital to the economy.

  3. These two types of travelling vehicles don't blend together very well.

Is there any reason we shouldn't introduce legislation that will force trucks to do the majority of their driving at night? Namely, that driving between cities and on the longer interstate and cross-country type drives.

If trucks and cars were largely separated during their individual drive times, incidents and tensions between these two types of vehicles could be greatly reduced. As a side effect, cars driving at night while the trucks are out doing their thing would naturally tail-off. Also, more car-driving travellers would be inclined to take more frequent, possibly longer roadtrips if they didn't have to tangle with semi's.

I know this is a gross over-simplification of the situation, but it sure seems to me that we are rapidly approaching a time when something like this is going to become necessary.
