A most fascinating and post-gonzo exhibit has invaded the walls of the Murphy Art Center's Side Car Gallery. Located on the second floor in the hall outside Big Car Gallery, the show is called "BANNED!" and features artifacts from and photographs of the Fountain Tavern in its last days as a dispenser of swill. Recently transformed into the much more appealing Brass Ring Lounge, the Fountain Tavern was a roosting place for some twisted taxidermy and bizarre signage explaining their fascistic rules and regulations. Photographer Paul Baumgarten documented the tavern's interior before the transformation and captured a prototype for just the kind of place where fun could not be found. The artist speaks: "The Fountain Tavern always left me cold. Underneath the decades of nicotine and filth was a soulless pit. More restrictive than a prison, it was a place to drink and smoke and stay in line. No exiting, no touching, no moving, no thinking. These photographs document the end of this place. They're not pretty. Burnt out, grainy, and hypersaturated, they could have been shot by a busload of Japanese tourists." BANNED!, curated by Phil Barcio, is a one night stand---tonight only, August 1 2008.
