I'm sure that something similar to this very post has been made several hundred times, but . . . oh well. After years spent eschewing breakfast, I've recently been encouraged to take up the habit. Thanks in large part to the fine people at the Steer Inn (get the 10th Street Skillet) and Le Peep (go for the Desperado), this has been a very positive experience. I've also been cooking through the morning haze at home. Pancakes especially. None of this is doing my waist any good, but it's doing wonders for my soul.

Does anyone else have a favorite breakfast food they'd like to share? First person to mention alcohol wins a fabulous glob of love from the personal stash of Drinky.

I know it's a chain, but I really like the country ham from Cracker Barrel, it's like chowing down on a salt lick, but so much better. Also getting a side "Bowl" of gravy is always nice.

I'll have to give Cracker Barrel a whirl. I should probably also mention my mom's chocolate gravy and biscuits. It's a southern thing, and it's exactly what it sounds like. Biscuits covered in buttery chocolate sauce. Oh my Lord, is it ever good. And probably also explains why folks in my family don't typically live long enough to collect Social Security.

I'm a chees-aholic, so I just like making omelletes with all kinds of cheese in them.

A Feta cheese omellete is really tasty, but so is one with extra sharp cheddar and salsa

omellets, pancakes, oatmeal! they are all splendid! i am especially partial to homemade french toast! no syrup on it though (just powdered sugar)..it's too much for my little belly to handle!

I've been known to put peanut butter on my french toast. Don't knock it til you've tried it.

Cafe Patachou has an omelette with brie in it. It's VERY tasty!

In the spirit of Elvis, I tried a peanut butter and banana sandwich for breakfast this morning. However, in an attempt to be somewhat health conscious I did not fry it. You know what? Odd as it sounds, that's a taste combination that definitely works. The King knew what he was doing after all.

Maybe when he was feeling frisky, but the official recipe from his cook goes like this:

Ingredients

2 tablespoons peanut butter (preferably smooth)
2 slices white sandwich bread
1 small ripe banana, mashed with a fork (about 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons butter

Preparation

Spread peanut butter evenly on 1 slice of bread, then spread mashed banana on other slice, leaving a 1/4-inch border around edge. Close sandwich, gently pressing bread slices together.

Heat butter in an 8- to 10-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat until foam subsides, then fry sandwich, turning over once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes total.

Eat immediately with a knife and fork. Drop dead of heart attack seconds later.

Belgian waffles served bananas foster style ... so decadent! Just like it sounds, you make bananas foster complete with all the butter, brown sugar, rum, splash of fresh-squeezed lemon and orange juice and then serve it on top of vanilla ice cream on a waffle. Soooo good, it works as breakfast AND dessert!
