Today:
We have all seen this. There is a scene in a movie, maybe at an outdoor cafe where two people are having a conversation and there, in the background is a bus with a billboard on the side. The advertisement is for something in the "real" world, like Coca-Cola or Sony.
Movie-makers do this all the time. Insert subtle shots of advertising in their movies. The studios make big money doing it.
Can you think of any good ones? Maybe you saw one and it really didn't register until later.
Here is an example from the 80's movie "TOP GUN"
The scene; Maverick has just done an illegal flyby of the control tower and he has been called on the mat for it. He is waiting outside the office of the Tower Chief who is very loudly chewing out the Air-Wing Training commander. A lowly orderly walks up with a tray with a Pepsi can on it and just as he gets to Maverick and the office door, out comes the Tower Chief who promptly knocks the tray out his hands and continues screaming on down the hall.
More recent, and blatant, examples might include "CASTAWAY" with Tom Hanks. This was basically a two hour ad for FEDEX. Or how about REESE'S PIECES in "E.T."? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfAzUAxWELU
