Today:
I'm not a music critic or a writer so hang with me but I have to bear witness
It's the next day and I'm still blown away by last night's performance from Laura Reed and Deep Pocket from ashville,NC/Atalnta GA at Sam's Saloon.
Big props to Mike Farmer for bringing them through, he's working hard down at Sam's bringing in a lot of very quality acts.
Laura Reed is magnetic and a must see live, lord have mercy, simultaneously channeling bob marley, lauren hill, erkah badu & sly; she brings it full force on the stage, exploding with soul, sensuality and spirit. They have great all original material that brings together the best of classic funk/soul with a modern edge of heady muscianship and positive lyrics. She's accompanied of vocals by Debrissa a godess on the stage in her own right, their vocal blend was natural and so tight. Debrissa even played sax.
The three piece rhythm section was one of the tightest I've seen for a long time. Deep in the Pocket as the name implies the played with perfect restraint when needed and pushed it into unexpected and refreshing territory at just the right times. I could go on about these cats---super nasty
Yeah I'm jockin them, but I don't even care..it was that tight especially given the fact that they played their asses off for damn near 2 hours to the 10 people in attendance (that's including bar staff, opening band, and me)..a lot of bands would have just phoned it in, had some attitude played 45 and split. They did the damn thang..Great band, great people--true pros, check them out next time they are through town, I'm going to make sure there is a next time-fo show!
and buy their CD on i-tunes -
